BUCKSBAUM CAMPUS

Nestled in the beautiful landscape of the Colorado Rocky Mountains, The Bucksbaum Campus of Aspen Music School is a testament to the harmonious integration of education and nature. Recognized as a top-tier teaching and performance institution, the school opens its doors to over 700 of the world’s finest music students every summer. In a quest to enhance this unique learning experience, the school endeavored to refurbish and redevelop its campus to better mesh with the natural landscape. The redesigned campus features two large orchestra rehearsal halls and a stunning cantilevered pavilion perched on the edge of a pond, acting as the centerpiece of the campus, while the studios and practice rooms blend with the hillside. The restoration of disturbed areas and the implementation of tree replacement strategies have created a cohesive community campus, delicately integrated into the natural environment and adjoining Aspen Country Day School campus. The ingenious design and utilization of the campus were recognized with a Merit Award for Design by ASLA Colorado, underscoring the Bucksbaum Campus’s status as a beacon of sustainable and integrated design.

The design of Bucksbaum campus was a collaboration to bring the visions established by the architect to life.  Each building had a unique design feature that set it apart from the other buildings on the campus.  BG worked closely with the architect to highlight these key features, while still meeting the needs of the space.

ASPEN MIDDLE SCHOOL

The new, state-of-the-art middle school was built to accommodate Aspen’s growing demand for a classroom facility, and to reflect the community’s commitment to sustainability.

BG provided MEP and LEED commissioning services for the new facility. We implemented a number of measures to promote energy efficiency. Some of these included installing a transpired solar collector to pre-heat outside air, installing high-efficiency lighting systems with daylighting and occupancy control censors, solar shading and natural ventilation cooling design, high-efficiency condensing boilers, and more.

Aspen Middle School was the first school in Colorado to achieve LEED Gold Certification. It also won a 2009 ACEC Colorado Engineering Excellence Award. Additionally, the systems are operating at half the utility cost of the previous smaller building.

VILLAGE AT NORTHSTAR

The owner redeveloped the existing ski area base real estate into a much larger village setting, to include six new mixed-use buildings, a new plaza and main street, complete with hardscaping, landscaping, snowmelting, roads and site structures, an ice rink and cover structure, and various other associated and support structures. The development plan relocated and reconstructed the main gondola’s lower terminal building to accommodate the layout.

BG reviewed multiple systems within the development including:

  • Master planning and design
  • Mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection engineering, lighting design, and building commissioning services
  • Central chiller and boiler plant design
  • Design consistent with ski resort/mountain architecture
  • Coordination with multiple consultants
  • LEED certification consulting

Additionally, BG provided general lighting for the pedestrian scale poles throughout the plaza and next to entrances to illuminate mounted decorative fixtures, downlights or the lighting for the retail signage. For visual interest, the architecture was accented by either uplighting of the dormers or lighting of the copper roof.

The different levels of light provided the owner the different schedules for each category. To accomplish this type of control a centralized lighting relay system was provided. The master relay panel located in one building with slave relay panels located in others controlled the facility. All panels were interconnected via Cat. 5 cable and the master panel was programmed to turn on and off the different categories or override the program with a master switch.

For additional QA/QC, BG provided commissioning which included document review, installation verification, and staff training.

W HOTEL ASPEN

BG provided mechanical, electrical, lighting and technology systems engineering design and construction administration services for the complete demolition and construction renewal of the former Sky Hotel. The new hotel is operated by W Hotels Worldwide. Slope-side at Aspen Mountain, the former hotel has been a hotspot in Aspen for decades. The renewed hotel maintains the original Aspen spirit as a gathering place for both locals and guests. The hotel will consist 88 guest rooms designed by Nema Workshop and 11 fractional residences designed by Rowland + Broughton. With a focus on dynamic food and beverage, programming includes a full restaurant and multiple bars, as well as other amenities, including a fully snowmelted 12,000 SF rooftop bar and pool complete with three spas overlooking Aspen Mountain.

Bordered by roadways on all sides by roadways and Aspen ski area, and with a full guest experience program on the roof, integrating the various MEP systems into the architecture to realize the desired guest experience in this highly visible location was a primary challenge. To accomplish this objective, BG worked closely with the architectural design and construction teams to find the right balance of invisibility and maintainability for the large central plant equipment as well as the various components such as exhaust fans and plumbing vents which are usually simply scattered across the roof. Within the guest rooms and residences, the MEP and technology systems are also closely integrated with interiors. The sleek and creative furniture and interiors include many “built-in” pieces which house lighting, technology and power systems components.
