The new, state-of-the-art middle school was built to accommodate Aspen’s growing demand for a classroom facility, and to reflect the community’s commitment to sustainability. BG provided MEP, specialty lighting design, and LEED commissioning services for the new facility. We implemented several measures to promote energy efficiency. On the lighting side, this included installing high-efficiency lighting systems with daylighting and occupancy control sensors, as well as solar shading. Aspen Middle School was the first school in Colorado to achieve LEED Gold Certification. It also won a 2009 ACEC Colorado Engineering Excellence Award. The systems are currently operating at half the utility cost of the previous smaller building.

The lighting for Aspen Middle School was designed to be a seamless compliment to the abundant daylighting throughout the building.  Many perimeter spaces such as the classrooms and library implement linear uplighting to create a visually brighter space and minimize the contrast between the indoors and the bright outdoors.

In the entry, care was taken to integrate the lighting into the linear wood ceiling while washing the metal wall finish in light. Like the rest of the school, the entry lighting was designed with several lighting zones to take advantage of ample daylight coming from the floor to ceiling window walls on the East and West sides of the space.
