Museum trustees redeveloped the 30+ year-old Aspen Art Museum from an old, renovated power plant into a new building in the heart of downtown. BG provided an array of engineering and commissioning services for the new facility which has six climate-controlled galleries, spaces for educational workshops, and a performance theater. Additionally, the museum has numerous public amenities, including a rooftop garden and cafe.
Art preservation and energy savings were equally paramount and influenced how BG approached the project. The teams implemented strategies to regulate temperature, air pressure, and humidity control systems in 17,500 SF of sensitive gallery spaces while saving energy. Additional considerations included the design and installation of the primary HVAC and control systems in tight, inconspicuous areas while accommodating access for future operations and maintenance staff.
With an undeniably unique woven exterior, BG also supplied the technology services through the structured cabling systems throughout the building and speech reinforcement systems. The latter allows curators to communicate with patrons via microphone and assisted listening devices. An award-winning project, the museum is home to valuable contemporary art and BG designed security to encompass IP-based CCTV monitoring and recording, motion detection, and electronic access. Leading up to the opening in 2014, BG continued to provide additional support, facilitate team collaboration, and resolve issue to satisfy schedule needs.
