The new, state-of-the-art middle school was built to accommodate Aspen’s growing demand for a classroom facility, and to reflect the community’s commitment to sustainability.
BG provided MEP and LEED commissioning services for the new facility. We implemented a number of measures to promote energy efficiency. Some of these included installing a transpired solar collector to pre-heat outside air, installing high-efficiency lighting systems with daylighting and occupancy control censors, solar shading and natural ventilation cooling design, high-efficiency condensing boilers, and more.
Aspen Middle School was the first school in Colorado to achieve LEED Gold Certification. It also won a 2009 ACEC Colorado Engineering Excellence Award. Additionally, the systems are operating at half the utility cost of the previous smaller building.
